The South Deck Launches Excitement

In mid-November, La Rabida celebrated the launch of its new 12-bed inpatient wing.  The $5 million unit was christened the “South Deck” of the S.S. La Rabida during a morning celebration attended by the hospital Board of Trustees, Executive leadership, and honored guests.

Later in the day, employees donned white sailor hats and colorful floral leis for their “cruise” aboard what some might describe as a luxury liner.

All but one of the South Deck’s 11 “cabins” are private suites.  Hospital leaders wanted to accommodate the increasing number of technology dependent “passengers” who require the isolation of a single occupancy room.

The project marks the completion of a two-phase renovation plan that began almost 10 years ago.  In 2001, the S.S. La Rabida North Deck opened with 37 beds.  Both decks are designed with the cruise ship motif, playing off La Rabida’s lakeside location.

During the christening ceremony, hospital Board Chair Peggy Gann told guests, the South Deck project was the vision of her board predecessor Allen Kanter.  He stepped down as Chairman in June, 2009 after 10 years at the helm.

Guests were wowed by the unit’s spacious rooms, impressive water views, and child-friendly nautical décor.

Later in the day, some 200 employees toured the South Deck.
Delighted with the new workspace, doctors and nurses, physical therapists and maintenance specialists “oohed” and “aahed” as they strolled in and out of rooms, each one with a view of Jackson Harbor to the west or Lake Michigan to the east.

The South Deck’s cabins are bright hosts to red and blue furniture and 32’’ wall mounted televisions, each with a built in DVD player.

Virtually all of the day’s “cruisers” lingered in “Cabin” 31 seeming to wish they could book a stay in this first-class accommodation that offered a spectacular view of Lake Michigan.

Ensconced in the embrace of a sofa sleeper the color of water, one employee became emotional while taking in the serene waters. “This is so beautiful. I could just sit here all day.”

Our first VIPs journeyed aboard in January.
