Down Syndrome

Down syndrome is the most common of all chromosomal abnormalities. It affects approximately one of every 800 to 1,000 births. Children born with this condition often have developmental deficiencies, distinct physical characteristics and a slower than average growth rate.

La Rabida provides family-centered care for children with Down syndrome. Care team members specialize in Down syndrome and focus on the child's intellectual, emotional and physical development. These specialists then work with the family to develop a program that will maximize the child's health and raise the possibilities for skill and esteem building experiences.

Children with Down syndrome often develop medical complications such as dental problems, obesity, hearing loss and visual impairment. Through proper medical supervision and counseling, parents can learn to minimize or prevent these complications.
