CBC Jury Awards Outpatient Center Top Prize

(CHICAGO) The Chicago Building Congress (CBC) recently awarded La Rabida Children’s Hospital its Merit Award for the hospital’s Outpatient Center, which celebrated its grand opening in 2014.

La Rabida was chosen from among four finalists for construction projects under $15M by a juried competition with judges representing professional construction associations, architecture, general contractors, consultants, attorneys and engineering fields.

Finalists competing with La Rabida included a nature center, temple and charter school. Criteria included distinctiveness of the design, quality of construction, the project’s safety record and the impact on the community.

Nestled on the shores of Lake Michigan, the 13,000-square-foot outpatient clinic includes floor to ceiling windows, a garden beside the large waiting area, and a design theme that reflects the hospital’s lakeside location.

For the final stage of the competition La Rabida President and CEO Brenda Wolf presented to the panel of judges, along with Berglund Construction, the general contractor, and VOA Associates, the project architect. Each presenter emphasized the unique qualities of the project in respect to the award criteria.

“We’re very pleased by this honor and that the CBC recognized both the innovation, creativity and aesthetic beauty of the outpatient center and the important role that this project plays in providing care to children with special health care needs and the support we offer families,” said Wolf.

By uniting diverse members of the city’s building community, CBC aims to “unite the industry in a shared purpose; advance the art, science and technology; and provide members with networking and educational opportunities,” according to CBC. Among its members are real estate professionals, general contractors, subcontractors, engineering firms and architects.

This is the second time the hospital has earned a Merit Award through CBC, having been awarded for the S.S. La Rabida Inpatient Unit in 2003.
