Workshop: Cortical Visual Impairment - COURSE FULL

This one day workshop will provide content about cortical visual impairment (CVI), the leading cause of pediatric visual impairment.

The visual function of infants born before a gestational age of 35 weeks may show impairment of one or more aspects of visual function. CVI is caused by damage to the visual centers of the brain, which interferes with communication between the brain and the eyes. The eyes are able to see, but the brain is not interpreting what is being seen.

This workshop will include information about the definitions of CVI, the characteristic behaviors, the medical causes of CVI, assessment of functional vision, and intervention strategies for individuals with CVI. Examples of instructional adaptations and specialized environments will be shared and video samples will reinforce the specialized methods. Participants will be offered instruction on the CVI Range Assessment and will be provided opportunities to practice this functional vision assessment protocol. Attendee participation is encouraged.

Objectives:
The individual will:
1. Describe the diagnostic criteria used to identify CVI

2. Discuss the medical causes associated with CVI

3. Describe the use of The CVI Range assessment

4. Identify treatment strategies and interventions used to facilitate access to materials and environments

Speaker: Christine Roman received her PhD in 1996 at University of Pittsburgh specializing in vision and infancy. She went to the University of Pittsburgh for her master’s in early childhood special education/medically fragile infants, orientation and mobility.  Her Bachelor degree was in visually handicapped/elementary education in 1973. She is presently a private consultant, Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI) Resources. ​
